Moved to a new server

Dell Poweredge 1800

Today I've moved this blog, and the rest of the e-shell.org websites (the planet, the paste tool and the wiki) to a new server.

The old one has been suffering hardware problems for the last few weeks. I still don't know what the problem is, but the server has been frozen suddendly and a hard reset is the only way to get it back when that happens.

On wednesday it was even worse, the server went offline 4 times in a row, each time the guys from Asturhosting put it back online, it went offline again in a matter of minutes.

Lucky me, I'm somehow a maniac of doing backups so getting everything up and running again, this time in a new server, was a matter of some hours.

All the e-shell.org websites are Zope-powered, so restoring them was pretty simple. I just installed Zope 2.10 from ports (the new server is FreeBSD too) and then I did restore a backup of my Zope instance. Finally I just started the instance as I used to do in the old server and et voilá, everything was running smoothly.

Of course I had to add some things to the Apache server running in front of Zope and I did have to modify the DNS entries accordingly, but it was an easy job.

Re: Moved to a new server

You can't be too maniac with backups. There are never enough of them :-)

BTW, what are the specs of your new server, and how much do you pay for it? (if you want to tell, of course) I'm happy with my tiny server on Gandi, but it's always good to know about other options.
